First Nations Bank of Canada (the “Bank”) is a schedule I Canadian chartered bank primarily focused on providing financial services to the Indigenous marketplace in Canada. The Bank was conceived and developed by Indigenous People, for Indigenous People and regards itself as an important step toward Indigenous economic self-sufficiency. The Bank offers Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, corporations and governments a full range of personal and business banking services including loans, mortgages, investments (registered and non-registered), transaction accounts and cash management.
To compliment its banking services, the Bank is in the application stage of obtaining a federal trust license. During the application process the Bank is permitted to provide certain trust services to Indigenous community trusts including trust development, trustee capacity building (comprised of trustee orientation, training and support), and Corporate and Administrative Trustee services.
The strategic objective of the Bank’s founding shareholders was to create a Bank that is controlled by a widely held group of Indigenous shareholders. Today that objective is a reality as the Bank is controlled by Indigenous shareholders from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Quebec who collectively own more than 81% of the outstanding shares of the Bank.
With the support of its Indigenous shareholders, the Bank has demonstrated consistent growth and profitability. Financial services are available through a network of eight full service branches (3 on reserve) and five Community Banking Centres with development for further branches and Community Banking Centres planned for the immediate future.
