ALANNA JONES
Membership Director, NATOA
Trust Manager
Garden River First Nation (GRFN) Community Trust
I have been employed as the Trust Manager for the Garden River First Nation Community Trust since June 1997. While assisting the Trust in managing a Trust Property portfolio of approximately $5.25 million (Capital and Revenue monies) annually, I also coordinate an annual Community Approval Process (CAP) or referendum Vote for Garden River First Nation Band members, as the Trust is accountable to them (the Band members).
With each valid Vote, the wishes of the GRFN Band members are realized. Since 1997, the Trust has held two successful CAP votes, in which the Trust distributed approximately $900,000 in revenue monies to the beneficiaries, via seven projects. These projects include the expansion of the cemetery, pow wows, literacy program, Garden River Day Care conference, expansion of the Adults in Motion (alternative high school), construction costs towards the Garden River Recreation Facility, and improvements to the Ojibway Park.
I believe that the GRFN Community Trust, with assistance from the NATOA organization, provides the Garden River Band members with (one of the few times in our Kitigaunzeebee history) a collective opportunity to empower our people. The legacy we create now will assure a better future by investing today for our seven generations that follow. Chi-miigwetch.
